Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Colorado Concealed Handgun Permit, and which class do I need?

In Colorado, a concealed carry permit is called a Concealed Handgun Permit, or CHP. There are two required classes and which one you need depends on where you are in the process.

If you are applying for the first time, you need the initial class, which Colorado sets at a minimum of eight hours. If you already hold a permit and are renewing it, you need the refresher class, which is a minimum of two hours. We teach both.

How long are the CHP classes?

The initial Concealed Handgun Permit class is a minimum of eight hours, so plan on a full day. The refresher class required to renew an existing permit is a minimum of two hours.

Those are the state minimums, not a target to rush toward. We use the time it takes to make sure you leave able to handle a firearm safely and shoot competently.

I have never handled a firearm. Where do I start?

Start with Basics of Pistol Shooting, or with the Women's Handgun and Self Defense Fundamentals class if you would prefer a women only setting. Both are built for students who have never touched a firearm, and neither assumes any prior experience.

You do not need to take a permit class first, and you do not need to own a firearm to begin. If you are not sure which class fits, call or email and we will point you at the right one.

Does Colorado require training before I buy a semiautomatic firearm?

Colorado now requires safety training before the purchase of specified semiautomatic firearms, meaning firearms that are gas operated, semiautomatic, and use a detachable magazine. The course requirement is administered through Colorado Parks and Wildlife.

We teach both the Basic and the Extended Specified Semiautomatic Firearms Safety classes. Take the class before you go to the dealer, not after. If you are unsure which of the two applies to your situation, contact us and we will work it out with you.

Do you offer women only classes?

Yes. The Women's Handgun and Self Defense Fundamentals class is women only. It covers handgun fundamentals along with the awareness, avoidance, and planning side of personal defense, and it is paced to leave room for questions.

Most students in it have never handled a handgun before, which is exactly what the class is designed for.
